Gunlom Falls
Gunlom Falls is a beautiful waterfall with a large swimming hole. It is located at the southern end of Kakadu National Park. When you arrive, there is a car park next to a shady picnic area. From here, it’s a short, easy walk to the lower Gunlom Plunge Pool. This is about 100 meters away.
You might want to take the stairs to the top of Gunlom Falls. This is where you will find nature’s own infinity pool. Here, you can swim in the rock pools and enjoy amazing views of the southern part of the park. The park rates this walk as a difficult climb, but the track is marked. Most visitors do this walk late in the afternoon. This helps them avoid the heat and watch the beautiful sunset.
Gunlom is great for families of all ages. It even has access for people with disabilities to the lower plunge pool. Depending on the rain from the last wet season, the lower pool now has a sandy area. This lets children play in the sand and shallow water. So, bringing sand toys or float rings can be a good idea!
There is also an easy walk around a small lake and the South Alligator River. This is called the Murrill Billabong Walk. It’s about 1 kilometre return around the lake and 2.5 kilometre return along the river. This walk is perfect for people who love watching birds.
If you decide to camp overnight, the facilities are very nice. They have solar-powered showers, toilets, and many places to camp with fire pits. If you are lucky, you might even see a family of wild horses near the camp grounds!
