Tiwi Island Tour + Return Ferry

Spend a day getting to know Tiwi culture, meeting local artists and making something of your own to take home. The Tiwi By Design tour visits Tiwi Design on Bathurst Island, one of Australia’s oldest and most artistically diverse art centres.

After arriving by ferry, you’ll be welcomed with a traditional smoking ceremony and a demonstration of totem dances. Enjoy damper and a cuppa for morning tea while meeting artists at work.

Your Tiwi guide will then take you on a walk through Wurrumiyanga, past buildings painted in distinctive Tiwi style, the historic mission precinct and the wooden Catholic church featured in Top End Wedding.

Visit the Patakijiyali Museum to learn about Tiwi Dreamtime stories and spirituality, the Tiwi people’s role during World War II and their proud sporting history, especially Australian Rules football.

After a hearty lunch, try screen-printing with a Tiwi design to create your own t-shirt, tea towel or fabric souvenir.

Tiwi Islands Art

Art is part of everyday life on the Tiwi Islands, with skills and distinctive designs passed down through generations. The seasons also shape what artists create by influencing the natural materials available.

The islands’ main art centres include Tiwi Design, Jilamara Arts and Munupi Arts and Crafts. At Tiwi Design on Bathurst Island, artists work across a wide range of styles and materials, including ochre paintings on bark, screen-printed fabrics and ironwood carvings.
