We’re visiting the Aboriginal Lands of Arnhem Land today. Access to this region is limited to a select group of tour operators.
Visitors experience a unique mix of traditional and living culture. Arnhem Land is perhaps the only place in Australia where Indigenous culture remains dominant. This is true despite a long history of outside interaction. For instance, the Macassens visited its shores for over 500 years to harvest sea slug. They sailed here from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and left a lasting legacy with the Aboriginal people.
The Europeans followed, and their impact on the Aboriginal people was much more deep and lasting. Yet, Arnhem Land has endured. It remains a last frontier and the homeland of around 18,000 people today.
While here, a traditional Aboriginal guide will lead you up Injalak Hill. They will show you amazing rock art on Injalak Hill (Long Tom Dreaming). This site holds some of the best rock art in Western Arnhem Land—or even all of Australia. The view from the hilltop is wonderful. You can look out across the vast floodplains and the Arnhemland escarpment.
We will say goodbye to our guide at the Injalak Art & Craft Centre. This non-profit Aboriginal organization is a great place to browse or buy local goods. While at the Centre (in Gunbalanya), you can watch the traditional Aboriginal artists painting. You can also see the women weaving pandanus baskets.
With stunning billabongs, birds, and escarpment, this is a truly unique and untouched haven in the Northern Territory.
