We begin our 4 Day Top End Adventure heading east along the Arnhem Highway to the Mary River for an exciting safari cruise on the wetlands. The wetland’s abundant wildlife has to be seen to be believed. Your expert guide knows exactly where to spot the resident crocs and birdlife as they navigate a custom-made boat through the rich waters and lily pads. Continue on to Kakadu National Park, stopping for lunch along the way at Bark Hut. Visit Bowali Visitor Centre to view a series of informative displays on the National Park’s flora and fauna before you travel to Ubirr to discover ancient Aboriginal rock art. Your Driver Guide will interpret the meaning of the x-ray style paintings as you walk through the open air galleries. Ubirr’s natural rock shelters contain art that depicts creation ancestors and animals found around the surrounding floodplain such as barramundi, goannas and long-necked turtles. Climb to Nadab lookout for spectacular views over the floodplain and escarpment country. Settle in for the night and make sure your camera batteries are charged for tomorrow’s adventure. Hotel: Anbinik Kakadu Resort, Kakadu.
This morning travel to Gunlom Falls for the chance to swim in a natural infinity pool. You have the option to take a steep but rewarding climb to the top of the falls, or an easier walk with plunge pool access. Cool down when you reach the top and take a dip in the serene plunge pools surrounded by gum trees with unbeatable views over the National Park. Afterwards continue to the small township of Pine Creek for lunch, then stop for an afternoon swim beneath the cascading waterfall at Edith Falls. Pass through the township of Katherine before you arrive at Nitmiluk Campground. Enjoy dinner with your fellow travellers before heading off to your permanent tent for the night!
Hotel: Nitmiluk Permanent Tents, Katherine, 2 nights.
A tasty breakfast awaits before you explore more of the Katherine region. Start the day with a 4.8 km (2 hour) moderate loop walk, where the lookout provides views of Katherine Gorge and 17 Mile Valley. Continue along the escarpment and back down towards the Visitor Centre. There’s free time to cool off in the campground pool before lunch at the Nitmiluk Centre. This afternoon, it’s time for a 2-hour scenic cruise through Katherine Gorge. You may see freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the river and many interesting species of birdlife. The cruise on the first of the two gorges takes you past sheer rock walls and requires a short walk to reach the second gorge. Return to the campground for dinner and another night in the permanent tents.
Wake to the sounds of native birds and wildlife. After breakfast, depart Katherine and travel to Litchfield National Park. Cool down at Buley Rockhole, a series of plunge pools that cascade down the hillside. After a quick bite to eat at the Wangi Falls Café, enjoy a dip beneath Wangi’s tumbling waters. Head back to Darwin to visit the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Market. Enjoy the sunset while you’re entertained by buskers, bands and performers and don’t forget to taste the sensational food on offer and take home a handmade souvenir. Your 4 Day Top End Adventure concludes this evening in Darwin.
